Jim Bridger est né en 1804 à Richmond, en Virginie.
En 1812, la famille émigre à St. Louis, dans le Missouri. Dix ans plus tard, à l'âge de 22 ans, les jeunes frères Bridger commencèrent leur vie comme trappeurs en se joignant à l'expédition dirigée par William Ashley et Andrew Henry sur la rivière Missouri en quête de peaux de castors.
Voici son histoire, racontée en musique par Johnny Horton:
